Tripp-Roberson, Monica T. “R. Nathaniel Dett.” Great Lives from History: African American. Ed. Carl L. Bankston III. 5 vols. California: Salem Press Inc., 2011. Dett arranged folksongs and spirituals for piano, voice and chorale. He strived to preserve black folksongs in the twentieth century.

Tripp-Roberson, Monica T. “Lillian Hardin.” The Twenties in America. Ed. Carl Rollyson. 3 vols. California: Salem Press Inc., 2012. Hardin was a composer, singer, jazz pianist and arranger. She was the former wife of Loius Armstrong.
